Preventing Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

There are ways in which you may be able to prevent nursing home abuse or neglect from plaguing your loved one.  If you are concerned about nursing home abuse and neglect, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is there any sort of video surveillance system installed in the hallways, residents' rooms, and other areas of the nursing home?  Video surveillance is a good sign that someone is monitoring the nursing home to ensure abuse or neglect does not occur.

  • Does the nursing home have licensed medical doctors, physicians, and pharmacists on staff who can supervise medical care and treatment of the residents?

  • Does the nursing home have licensed registered or vocational nurses on staff?

  • Does the nursing home appear to be clean?  Does it smell?  Do the residents seem well-kept and cared for?

  • Does the nursing home have any citations?  Has the nursing home been investigated in the past?

By taking the time to research the nursing home's reputation and history, as well as by spending some time simply walking through the home, you can get a better idea of the type of care and treatment your loved one would likely receive should he or she become a resident. In addition to familiarizing yourself with the facility, you should also make an effort to get to know the staff, since these are the people who will be taking care of your loved one on a daily basis.  These simple steps should help you make a decision as to whether or not you feel comfortable putting your loved one in the nursing home.
